Overtime Answer

What is 5 hours of overtime at $22 an hour?

$165 in overtime pay at a 1.5× overtime multiplier. If you also worked 40 regular hours, estimated gross pay for the week is $1,045 before taxes and deductions.

Regular pay: $22 × 40 = $880 · Overtime: $22 × 1.5 × 5 = $165 · Total = $1,045

How the math works

A standard time-and-a-half overtime example multiplies the regular hourly rate by 1.5, then multiplies that overtime rate by the number of overtime hours. At $22 per hour, the overtime rate is $33 per hour. Five overtime hours therefore produce $165 in overtime pay.

If the employee worked 40 regular hours first, regular pay is $880. Adding the $165 overtime amount gives $1,045 in estimated gross weekly pay.

Important overtime note

Federal overtime rules depend on whether an employee is covered and nonexempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the legal calculation can depend on the employee's regular rate of pay and other compensation. The U.S. Department of Labor explains that covered nonexempt employees generally receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at not less than one and one-half times the regular rate.
